The Annual Poor Boys Tarpon Fly Tournament in Islamorada, Florida takes place on July 4th through 6th. It is a two-day tournament where Anglers and Guides alike can fish. Points are awarded for tarpon that are brought under control that are a minimum of four feet long, regardless of weight. In the event of a tie, the winner is judged on time.

12 Fish caught overall - 25 anglers

Grand Champions: Drew Moret & John Schneid - 3 releases day 1

First Runner Up: Baird Graham & Conner Flamm - 2 releases day 1, 1 day 2

Second Runner Up: Paul Ross & Casey Spalding - 2 releases day 2

Best Other: Cheryl Culberson - Backcountry Slam

2019 Results:

4 fish caught overall - 16 anglers 

Grand Champions: Drew Moret & John Schneid and John Sheehan & Kevin Sheehan - both teams caught and released a fish at 12:06 PM on day one of fishing (tied on time)

First Runner up:  Jeremy Fisher & Louis Muller 1 release 

Second Runner up: Paul Ross with 1 release 

Best other: Andrew Austin

15 fish caught overall

Grand Champions: Drew Moret & John Schneid 5 releases (on time)

First Runner Up: Billy Knowles and Bernie Welch 5 releases

Second Runner Up: Mike Alfano and Bryon Chamberlain 2 releases (on time)

The Award for traveling the furthest went to Kenny Simmons, John Dickerson, and Jeremy Young. They are part of The Goodwill Guides Organization out of northern Georgia, which teaches veterans how to fly fish and gets them into the competitive world of tournament fishing. We were glad to have them and support their cause.

 

The Poor Boys Tarpon Fly Tournament will be held every year at the Lorelei. The kick-off will July 4th and fishing will be July 5th and 6th. The awards ceremony will be at the Lorelei after fishing on July 6th. If you would like to participate this year please contact Diane 305-509-0253
